As David King watched high-rise condos and urban lofts going up in St. Petersburg, Fla., he noticed that shoppers were driving all the way to Miami to buy urban/contemporary furniture. To keep shoppers closer to home, he opened Doma Home Furnishings, a 3,000-square-foot store and design studio in a strip mall on 22nd Avenue in St. Pete. King says his store has the “flavors” of Z Gallerie and West Elm.
While he buys accessories from various U.S.-based manufacturers and importers, King tells me he chose his sofa vendors specifically because they make their frames in the United States. King shops the Atlanta, High Point and Las Vegas markets, and he visits manufacturers at their headquarters.
Although he opened Doma just last year, King is no stranger to retailing. He started his career in New Jersey with Scandinavian Design Gallery. Just prior to opening Doma, he operated American Closet Systems (achieving his goal of owning a business by the age of 40).
